Quick Tips
Dos & Don'ts to advance your job search
  • Arrive for work early - never appear rushed or flustered.
  • Maintain a positive attitude - negativity reflects poorly on you and impacts morale.
  • Keep your promises and honor your commitments.
  • Take pride in your work and accomplishments.
  • Don't abuse work time for personal activities, including appointments and phone calls.
  • Don't let colleagues with a poor work ethic get you down - focus on your own productivity.

Demonstrate a strong work ethic
Making an effort to develop a strong work ethic early on will help you maintain it throughout your career. It will translate to better productivity and performance for your employer's benefit, and greater job satisfaction for you. Some obvious ways to do so include being punctual and prepared. Show up for work ten or fifteen minutes early to get yourself settled in for a productive day. Take appropriate breaks and don't check out for the day right at the stroke of closing time. Be on time for meetings and prepare in advance by reading any documentation provided or writing out some notes for discussion. Meet or beat deadlines for any projects that come your way, and manage expectations appropriately. Be consistent in your work and confident in your competence. Establish the reputation of having a strong work ethic, then live up to it - the rewards will follow.

My Coaching
Get an edge over the competition
You were hired to produce results. Establishing a good work ethic early on will help you meet - and hopefully exceed - your stated objectives for the job. It's serious business if you consistently do not meet your objectives. Work on being diligent, self-motivated, independent and positive - just some of the hallmarks of having a good work ethic. The more you practice and persist, the more likely you'll be to succeed - and exceed your objectives.
