Quick Tips |
| Dos & Don'ts to advance your job search |
Proofreading Pointers
- Use your word processor's spell check and grammar check - but understand that they are not fool-proof.
- Put your resume aside for a day and come back to it with fresh eyes for proofreading.
- Have other people proofread it as well - they might catch something you overlooked.
- Read your resume from back to front to give you a different perspective and to catch sneaky errors.

Creating and nailing the content of your resume isn't easy, and certainly not something you want to do in a single sitting. To make it easier, break it down into four stages:
Determine the format you want to use.
Typically, hiring managers expect to see chronological resumes which list your previous jobs in reverse order. However, you may choose to create a skills-based resume. This format might be more appropriate, for instance, if you have significant gaps in your career history. A values-based resume is another option you might want to consider. If you plan to be using job boards, then having a keyword-based version of your resume is essential.
Make an outline.
Refer to the file you created as you were getting organized. Outline the main sections as per the resume format you've selected. For chronological resumes, include your work experience (companies, positions held) and education credentials (degrees, diplomas, certificates). in reverse chronological order and include dates and/ or durations. For skills-based resumes, demonstrate how and where you acquired specific skills, and support this by describing related achievements and accomplishments.
Beef it up.
Enrich the content you've outlined so far, beefing it up with important details. If you have a job description, use it as a guide, but don't simply list your responsibilities - showcase your experience and accomplishments. Draft three to four main points for each job or skills area. Use the Resume Builder Worksheet to help you clearly define your experience and accomplishments.
Edit.
Pay attention to the finishing touches, including formatting, style, grammar and spelling.

My Coaching
|
| Get an edge over the competition |
| Your resume will follow you throughout the entire job search process. It will continue to live on in your employment file at your place of work, so make sure it's accurate. If you have any gaps in your resume, you'll have the opportunity to address them in your interviews. Perhaps you went back to school, went travelling, were on parental leave, or unemployed for some other reason. The employer may probe you for more information and you should be prepared to discuss this. You don't have to go into detail or be apologetic about it; careers, and life for that matter, aren't always linear. |
