Your cover letter is a statement of interest in a specific job or company. Make a great impact by keeping it as concise as possible. You can create a relatively generic cover letter as a basis for the ones you'll actually be sending out. Each company or opportunity will have a unique focus and recipient, so you'll want to customize it accordingly. Don't simply repeat the facts as outlined in your resume. Give the reader unique but relevant points to consider. Structure your cover letter as follows:
The Opening
Here's where you position yourself and state why you want this job or why you want to work for this company.
The Body
Now you have to support your statement of interest and highlight your credentials in a few lines.
The Close
Briefly wrap up the letter with gratitude and the intention to follow up.

| Instead of indicating an objective or providing an experience profile on your resume, you can do so in your cover letter. Whether you're looking for your first job or pursuing a career change, your objectives might be markedly different than your experience to date. Unless you clarify your intentions, your letter and contradictory resume may suggest some kind of mistake. Make sure that what you are saying in your letter is aligned to what you state in your resume. If it's not, be sure to have an appropriate segue or explanation. Your cover letter shouldn't be the story of your life. The objective of your cover letter and resume is to get an audience with the employer. In an interview, you'll have the opportunity to reveal more about your personality and your experiences. It's great to be eager and enthusiastic, but don't overdo it. |
