Quick Tips
Dos & Don'ts to advance your job search
The SAR (Situation, Action, Result) method is used to answer behavioral questions in an interview. You can also use it to critically review your resume and validate your claims.

Do a critical review
At this point, you should have a solid resume and cover letter. You spent time creating the content. You drafted and edited for clarity and brevity. You formatted and proofread. They read well and look great. But, do they really represent you acurately? Now it's time to take a hard look with a critical eye at how you've represented yourself on the page. Read about yourself from a different perspective, as if through someone else's eyes. How do your resume and cover letter position or "sell" you? Now for the truth test. Can you speak to each of the points with confidence and integrity? Do you have references that can support your claims? Can you substantiate your statements with examples? Can you elaborate on your experience and accomplishments if probed? If you find you can't validate a claim, restate it so that you can - otherwise, remove it. Critically reviewing your resume and cover letter will help you put your best foot forward now, with the added benefit of priming you for any upcoming interviews.

Get an edge over the competition
Writing a resume can be very daunting – no wonder some people pay others to do it! There are many organizations and people willing to provide resume writing services. You may think this will make things easier for you, but in the long run, you lose out. Writing your own resume can be an incredibly valuable and satisfying exercise. You'll learn a great deal about yourself during the process. In addition, the time and effort you put in now will help prepare you for upcoming interviews. Now that's payback!
