Your resume and cover letter are living documents. You will need to capture new experiences and achievements that unfold overtime. You should also modify it with every opportunity you are seeking. Sometimes you may just be changing surface details, such as names and addresses. Other times, you'll be making more substantial changes depending on the nature of the opportunity. If you find that you're not getting any interviews, take this as a sign that your resume and cover letter need some work. Perhaps you are getting interviews, but aren't getting any offers. Aside from working on your interview skills, ask yourself, and others, if your resume and/ or cover letter might be sending the wrong message. Take a step back and be objective in your assessment.
Do you truly "fit" the job in terms of experience and character? If you do, work on modifying your documents to better showcase this alignment. If you realize you actually don't fit, then consider whether you're willing to do what it takes to become aligned. Otherwise, you should be considering other job options. If you want to achieve your objectives, use feedback and analysis to help you evolve your documents - and yourself.

| Get an edge over the competition |
| Don't wait for a job change to update your resume. Regularly refreshing your resume will ensure that you have the most current and accurate details on hand. A good rule of thumb is to revisit your resume at least every time you have a performance review. Since you'll be reviewing your accomplishments anyway, they will be top of mind and ready to showcase on your resume. Don't risk forgetting important information and details by letting too much time pass before capturing them on paper. If your job title changes, make another entry under your Employment History to reflect this. If you use an objective or an experience profile, then consider updating these as well. This exercise of regularly updating your experience as well as your accomplishments on your resume might well give you motivation and a fresh perspective on your career aspirations. |
