Quick Tips
Dos & Don'ts to advance your job search
Things to keep in mind when working with a recruiter:

  • Initial exchange. Make a good first impression and be candid during this "prequalifying” stage.
  • Live meeting. Whenever possible, this should be in person, but may also be by teleconference if location distance is an obstacle.
  • Email and phone communications. Be prepared, timely and clear in all communications. Get as much quality information as you can about the opportunity, the company, and the interviewers themselves.
  • Be politely persistent. Keep the recruiter appropriately engaged, reiterating your qualifications and interest, without being annoying.

Know the process
Recognize that there is a process when working with recruiters and search firms. You're not the only player in the game, and there are other stakeholders and a number of variables that can affect the process. Don't assume that the recruiter is stalling - there are often circumstances on the employer side that cause the process to take longer than initially intended. Expect the process to be delayed, and you will save yourself much frustration. At the same time you are being patient, you want to be politely persistent to maintain your position of interest.

My Coaching
Get an edge over the competition
The hiring process takes time. Decisions take time - usually more time than planned because there are so many unpredictable variables involved. Trust that the recruiter is well intentioned in making things run quickly and smoothly. Don't appear impatient, as this may suggest desperation. You don't want to be a nuisance and you don't want to send the wrong message.
