Quick Tips
Dos & Don'ts to advance your job search
Use the Network Builder Worksheet to help you maximize your networking efforts. State objectives around your specific networking activities, such as "I want to introduce myself to five industry experts at this meeting, exchange cards with all of them and follow up promptly with them, and with any referrals received or promised". When you set your objectives, you need to be systematic in your approach, so you can track your progress and measure your success.

Determine your objectives
Setting some objectives will help focus your networking efforts. There are many different networking activities you can engage in - decide which will be most effective and fruitful for you. These can include cold calls, warm calls, trade shows and conferences, joining associations, participating in industry events and volunteering, to name a few. Determine your specific objectives around your activities. How many networking calls do you want to make per week? How many events do you want to attend per month? How many associations do you want to join? What kind of volunteering do you want to do? Once you establish these parameters, it will be easier to get down to the networking nitty gritty. You likely have the opportunity to network in some way every day, so make the most of it by setting clear objectives and working toward them.

My Coaching
Get an edge over the competition
Keep in mind that building your network is an ongoing process, and you need to increase and modify your range of contacts regularly. Some people seem to be natural networkers, knowing how to meet the right people and knowing the right things to say. If you feel like a networking novice, make an effort to practice. The more you network, the easier it will become. As with everything else in your job search, persistence pays off.
