Some people always seem to know what to say, and have a knack for putting people at ease while getting what they want. If you're not a natural networker, do some advance preparation and practice. First of all, make sure you have a personal pitch that clearly and concisely describes your positioning. Be prepared with a 30-second "commercial" about who you are, what you do, and what you're looking for. This will paint a picture for someone even if you meet them briefly. It's also particularly effective if you have a limited amount of time in which to meet a lot of people. You should not only know what to say, you should also know what you want - be prepared to respond confidently when someone asks "how can I help you?".

Get an edge over the competition
Be your own brand ambassador. When you meet people, you want to give them the best impression of you so they'll come back for more - the same as they would do with any trusted brand. Your networking personal pitch should have a clear introduction, followed by a statement of what your area of interest is, and finally, your selling proposition. Try out a few different versions and keep practicing to see what works best for you.
