Quick Tips
Dos & Don'ts to advance your job search
  • Display 2 or 3 recommendations from your connections as testimonials of your work, capabilities and accomplishments.
  • Make your profile public if you want people to find, learn about and connect with you.
  • Don't lie or mislead people - when you put things on the internet, they are there to stay, so be sure keep your profile honest and straightforward.
  • Don't post inappropriate status updates - keep your messages professional and relevant.

Use online professional networks
Online professional networks are similar to other social networking sites, but geared at business professionals. LinkedIn is by far the most popular and effective one these days with over 50 million users world wide. It's a very powerful online tool designed to build and maintain your network of professional contacts. The benefits can be tremendous, and it costs you nothing for a basic account. As with other forms of networking, the more you put in the more you get out. Not only can you expand your network of contacts in your field, you will also have an amazing resource at your fingertips to keep a pulse on what's happening in the marketplace. You can learn about different companies out there, who the players are and what people are talking about. You may also find your next job through LinkedIn, as many people post opportunities on the site. Whether you're actively searching for a job or simply interested in networking, LinkedIn is a tool no professional should do without.

Get an edge over the competition
Setting up your profile is an important first step in starting to use LinkedIn effectively. Provide a concise description of what you do under the Headline, and include more details about your interests, skills and objectives in the Summary section. Update your status regularly to keep your profile in front of your connections. List your work history, including the organizations you've worked for, job titles and accomplishments under the Experience section. Get recommendations from as many contacts as you can, but display only a few relevant ones at a time. Make sure you include current contact information so people can get in touch with you. Once you have your basic profile set up, you can start learning more about the other useful LinkedIn features.
