Quick Tips
Dos & Don'ts to advance your job search
  • Approach the interview itself as a kind of practice for future interviews.
  • Challenge yourself by practicing with different people.
  • Practice your body language
    (eye contact, handshake, etc.).
  • Evaluate your performance after every practice and after every interview using the
    Interview Scorecard Worksheet.

Practice
There's a saying that "practice makes perfect". There's also a saying that "nobody's perfect". So, best to live by the saying "practice makes better". Any little bit of practice you do will make you that much better come show time. Don't show up to the interview without having reviewed and practiced what you're going to say. The more you practice, the more comfortable and articulate you'll be in the actual interview. Whether you talk to yourself in front of the mirror, or recruit a friend or family member to role play with you, practice as much as you can. Though you can't anticipate exactly how things will unfold, you'll be armed with responses to common questions. The confidence that comes with having adequately prepared and practiced can make all the difference.

Get an edge over the competition
Typically, mock interviews are structured sessions conducted by a career professional. They are videotaped so you can view and analyze your performance together. These simulated interviews are very helpful in that they give you the opportunity to go through the whole process. If you can't find a professional in your area, ask a friend or family member to play the role of the interviewer.
