Quick Tips
Dos & Don'ts to advance your job search
Do not provide the names and contact information of your references unless you've first asked their permission. When you know there's a good chance that they'll be receiving a call, prepare them in advance. Agree on what points they can support in terms of your candidacy.

Alert your references
The further along you get in the process for a specific job, the clearer it should become who you want as your references. When the discussions with the employer start to get more serious, prepare to contact your selected references. Find out where they currently are and how and when they can be best reached. Discuss with them again the details you would like them to be able to support.

Get an edge over the competition
Be sure to keep your reference list current and accurate. You don't want to have your prospective employer trying to track people down, or calling you for an update. Avoid this situation by staying in touch with your references throughout your job search, and definitely contacting them prior to your prospective employer's attempt to reach them.
