Quick Tips
Dos & Don'ts to advance your job search
  • Leave on the best terms possible with all colleagues.
  • Send a simple thank you note to your colleagues with your new contact information.
  • Offer to help with the transition of your work.
  • Don't boast about your new job.
  • Don't make it personal – avoid criticizing colleagues and management.
  • Don't be negative in any way – is that how you want to be remembered?

Know what to say
Before any sweeping broadcasts are made about your resignation, be sure to have a conversation with the right person/ people first. Determine who these people should be - is it your direct manager? Is it somebody from HR? This conversation should be in person, and not via email or voice mail. Don't use this as an opportunity to vent - keep the conversation positive and professional. You want to make sure you leave on a positive note, with a good impression. Use the
Sample Resignation Scripts to help you decide what you're going to say and practice in advance, especially if you're nervous about having the discussion.

My Coaching
Get an edge over the competition
At the end of your resignation conversation, present your employer with an official letter of resignation. Keep it professional and concise, and don't feel compelled to communicate all the reasons you're leaving. Under no circumstances should you say anything derogatory or controversial. Simply indicate your notice period and your commitment to fulfill your current obligations before moving on. Also express your thanks for the experience and learning opportunity you had at the company and any other positive comments you can come up with. Use the
Sample Resignation Letter as a guide.
